BC Studies: An Annotated Index, 1969-2024

Compiled and edited by Gordon R. Adshead. BC Studies is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary academic journal published quarterly by the University of British Columbia since its establishment in 1969 by founding editors UBC history professor Margaret Prang and UBC Political Science Department head Walter D. Young. Papers published in BC Studies cover a wide range of topics: Indigenous studies, biography, social and political history, women’s issues, politics and government, economic history and development, archaeology, architecture and historic sites, geology and the enviroment, art and literature.

Annotated Index to the Canadian Bookman

Compiled and edited by Grace Heggie and Anne McGaughey. Revised by Gordon Adshead in 2023. The Canadian Bookman was a specialized periodical dedicated to the promotion of the literary and artistic culture of Canada. Its focus was books and authors, literary criticism, publishing, book selling and the library profession.

Annotated Index to the Canadian Forum, 1920-2000

The Canadian Forum was Canada’s oldest continuously published cultural and political periodical, from the beginning a platform for the promotion of nationalist and progressive ideas in art, literature and politics. Annotated Index to the Canadian Illustrated News, 1869-1883

Compiled and edited by Gordon Adshead. The Canadian Illustrated News was published weekly in Montreal by George E. Desbarats, 'a complete repertory of current events and a record of the feelings and ideas of the times', with a minimum of seven pages 'handsomely illustrated by the wonderful and beautiful process of leggotype.' William Augustus Leggo had developed a process of furnishing photographic illustrations, half-tone photoengravings which were a regular feature throughout the life of the magazine.

Annotated Index to the Canadian Magazine, 1893-1939

Compiled and edited by Grace Heggie and Anne McGaughey. Revised (1893-1914) and extended (1915-1939) by Gordon Adshead. The Canadian Magazine, as it is commonly known, was established in 1893, and saw itself as the leading literary publication in this country. The periodical covers all areas of Canadian politics, society and culture as it reflects the development of the modern nation of Canada from 1893 to 1939.

Chatelaine: an Annotated Index, 1928-2013

Compiled and edited by Gordon R. Adshead. Chatelaine was first published in March 1928, created by the Maclean-Hunter Publishing Company with the purpose of focusing" on topics of interest to Canadian women: romance fiction, food, style and fashion, home design and furnishing, child care and upbringing, women’s health and relationships, with occasional articles on politics and women’s rights. Most authors were Canadians, both male and female, and almost all subjects covered were Canadian events and personalities.

Index to Descant, 1970-2014

Compiled and edited by Gordon Adshead. Descant was a quarterly literary magazine established in 1970 by a group of" University of Toronto graduate students as a mimeographed publication of the Graduate English Association. Its objective was to publish the work of new and established writers and visual artists, chiefly from Canada but also from around the world. Source materials for the preparation of this index were made available by the Resource Sharing Department, York University Libraries.

Annotated Index to Everywoman's World, 1914-1923

Compiled and edited by Gordon Adshead; coordinated by Peter Duerr, York University. Founded by Isador Simonski. When he couldn't find a publication suitable for advertising his products to women, his response was to start his own. This magazine was one of Canada's first truly national periodicals and hit a circulation of 100,000 — a first for a Canadian serial — shortly after it began. It is a treasure trove of information about contemporary attitudes, consumer behaviour and cultural productions of the era. The Financial Post Index, 1907-1948

Compiled and edited by Gordon Adshead. The Financial Post was founded in 1907 by Colonel John Bayne Maclean. His intention was to provide a publication that would serve the financial field, analyze and interpret in direct and understandable language all pertinent Canadian business and economic events, including stock market coverage.

Index to Maclean's Magazine, 1905-1976

Compiled and edited, with abstracts, by Gordon Adshead, with indexing contributions by Julie Drexler, York University;" Coordinated by Vivienne Monty, York University. Maclean's was acquired by John Bayne Maclean in 1905, at which time it was known as The Business Magazine, which became The Busy Man's Magazine. It was officially renamed Maclean's in 1911. From a brief digest of articles reprinted from other periodicals, the magazine quickly expanded and under the editorship of Thomas B. Costain (1914-1920) became a vehicle for original writing and reporting of Canadian national issues and stories.

Annotated Index to Massey's Magazine, 1896-1897

Compiled and edited by Grace Heggie and Anne McGaughey, revised by Gordon Adshead. Massey's Magazine has been noted in terms of both style and content [as] one of the finest magazines ever produced in Canada.

Index to the Monetary Times of Canada, 1867-1968

Compiled and edited by Gordon Adshead. Coordinated by Vivienne Monty, York University. The Monetary Times was not just a financial newspaper which spanned many critical years of Canada's economic development but also a paper that addressed the social, political, historical and biographical aspects of that development. It was, in its time, the national commercial paper.

An Annotated Index to Prairie Forum, 1976-2013

Compiled and edited by Gordon Adshead. Prairie Forum was an interdisciplinary scholarly journal published by the Canadian Plains Research Center in Regina, Saskatchewan: semi-annually from 1976 to 2010, and annually from 2011 to 2013. Material in the 2013 issue, which reprinted a selection of articles from the previous issues, is not covered by the Index. Topics covered include Canadian prairie region history, art and literature, architecture and historic sites, biography, geography, geology and the environment, industry and economy, social and political history, plains region indigenous peoples. Includes book reviews, lists of academic dissertations.

The Rebel, 1917-1920

Compiled and edited by Gordon R. Adshead. This index includes coverage of the Canadian Forum’s" predecessor, The Rebel (1917-1920), a tiny magazine published by faculty of the University of Toronto.

Saturday Night Index, 1887-2005

Compiled and edited by Gordon Adshead. Saturday Night represents, throughout the period to be covered by the index, a defined and influential segment of the Canadian population -- upper middle-class English-speaking Torontonians. Index to the Tamarack Review, 1956-1982

Compiled and edited by Gordon R. Adshead. Established and edited by Robert Weaver, the Tamarack Review was an important Canadian literary magazine which published literature in a wide variety of genres, including fiction, poetry, drama, essays, travel memoirs, literary criticism and autobiography. Always a small publication in terms of its circulation, the Tamarack achieved an influence out of all proportion to its sales and distribution.

Annotated Index to the University Magazine, 1901-1920

Compiled and edited by Grace Heggie and Anne McGaughey. Revised by Gordon Adshead. The McGill University Magazine and its successor, The University Magazine, were published in Montreal from December 1901 until April 1920. The University Magazine (1907-1920), under the editorship of Sir Andrew Macphail, was then and is now regarded as one of the foremost journals of thought and opinion in the history of Canadian periodical literature.
