William is regarded as a son of Robert Ripley of Battersby, Yorkshire, but there is some confusion about his birth. It is possible (though unlikely) that he was an adopted son. This question will be mostly resolved when markers are available from descendants of Robert's other male children. Note: There are a number of exact matches with members of the Walker family of Scotland.
