Early in the Nineteenth Century several sons of Christoffel Deyo emigrated from New York State to Frontenac County in Upper Canada.
In Frontenac, the Deyos became neighbours of the Charlton family, members of which had recently arrived from the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. The Deyos and Charltons intermarried, and some moved to Elgin County in Southern Ontario.
The Town of New Paltz, New York was founded in 1678 by French Huguenots, refugees who emigrated from Mannheim in the German Palatinate. They settled in an area of the present-day village of New Paltz known as the Huguenot Street Historic District, and established their own local government.
Although it has been assumed that Christoffel Deyo was a descendant of the Deyos who helped establish New Paltz, there is at present no firm evidence of this ... beyond family legend, naming patterns and some suggestive census data. This website attempts to lay out the available information in an orderly fashion, with as much documentation as can be found. Let me know if you find mistakes or inconsistencies. If you have theories of your own, please send them along.
