1. Henry Ripley [Robert^1st], b 1762 d at Nappan, N.S. Nov 21, 1835, age 74.[1] Henry was baptised Oct 14, 1762 in St. Andrew's Church, Ingleby, Yorkshire, the first son of Robert and Isabella (Beane) Ripley. He married Mary Fawcett, b 1770 d after 1829,[2] daughter of John Fawcett and Jane (Daniels) Fawcett, Yorkshire emigrants to Nova Scotia aboard The Two Friends, March 1774. Mary and Henry resided at Nappan, where they purchased 600 acres of marsh and upland from the estate of J.F.W. DeBarres. Henry was regarded as an excellent farmer.

2. Thomas Ripley [Robert^1st], b 1764 d 1836(?). Thomas Ripley was baptised in St. Andrew's Church, Ingleby on March 13, 1764, the son of Robert and Isabella (Beane) Ripley. There is no further mention of him in the Ingleby registers.[4] Tradition has it that although Thomas did not come to Nova Scotia with his family in 1774, he nevertheless came later. One 'old report' suggests he was a schoolteacher, and he may have been left behind to continue his schooling. A Thomas Ripley 'native of Great Britain, late from Yorkshire, has a wife' applied for a grant of land in Cumberland County in November, 1816. The implication is that Thomas and his wife are childless, since children are listed for other signatories to the petition. Thomas Ripley was granted 150 acres.[5] Possibly this Thomas was Thomas Ripley of Ingleby Greenhow, son of Robert. Robert Ripley states in his will of 1797 that 'first I give and bequeath to my son Thomas Ripley, now in England, sixty pounds'.[6] He was alive in 1830 (age 66), when he was the recipient of a bequest from his mother, Isabella (Bean) Ripley. Because it was not specified in the will that he was in England in 1830, it may be that he was in Nova Scotia.[7] It is not known where Thomas stayed when the rest of his family sailed to Nova Scotia. There are a number of possiblities. He may have been boarding with a schoolmaster in a nearby community, or he may have been apprenticed and living with another family. It is also possible that he remained with relatives, the Calverts, or with his aunts Esther and Mary Ripley, or his uncles, Henry and William Ripley. Ernest Coates wrote "stories are told that Thomas Ripley was a school teacher and that at one time [he] taught school in Fenwick, N.S."

In 1832 an Alice Ripley died in Maccan, Nova Scotia, the wife of Thomas Ripley.[8]. At present, this Thomas is unidentified, and it is possible that it could be Thomas Ripley, b 1764. Ellis (or Alice) Ebetson (or Ebotson) was born in Lastingham, North Yorkshire in 1764. She married a Thomas Ripley in 1796 at Lastingham.[9]

3. Mary Ripley [Robert^1st], bap Mar 27, 1765 d 1835. m Robert Read, b 1761 d 1830, a son of Stephen and Mary (Colling)[10].

4. Robert Ripley [Robert^1st], bap Apr 6, 1766. m Jane Rushton, b ca 1770. Robert and Jane settled at Southampton, N.S.

5. Elizabeth Ripley [Robert^1st], bap Oct 27, 1767 d 1841. She married David Pugsley, b ca 1759 d 1841 age 82.

6. William Ripley [Robert^1st], bap Oct 9, 1769 in St. Andrew's Church, Ingleby, Yorskhire. Died Jun 19, 1845, in Nova Scotia.[14] He married (1) Hannah Coates, b 1775, d Oct 14, 1817, daughter of Thomas Coates[15] and Ann (Hood) Coates[16], of Thirklby near Thirsk, Yorkshire,[17] and (2) Christianna Shipley, b ca 1780. Christianna was the widow of Thomas Shipley, and the daughter of Robert and Jane Ennis of Barronsfield, N.S.[18]

7. John Ripley [Robert^1st], bap Dec 31, 1770[25] d Jun 4, 1853 at River Philip, N.S. He married Margaret Donkin, b ca 1775, daughter of William Donkin, b Jun 26, 1734[26] and Ann (Scott) Donkin, chr 1734 d Feb 29, 1807 at River Philip, who emigrated to Nova Scotia from Ovingham, Northumberland (in the Tyne valley) circa 1772. In 1802 John moved to River Philip, where he farmed. P.A.N.S. Land Grant Papers: A petition from John Ripley in 1807 stated that he was a settler in River Philip, had a wife and three children, and wanted land on the west side of the river at the back of land laid out for Mr. Delesdernier. There is another petition from John Ripley in 1809 in which he states that 'he emigrated from England upwards of thirty years ago, and has lived for the last five years at River Philip. He has a family of four children ...'. He wants three hundred acres of land. In 1814, in a grant of 1750 acres at River Philip to John Ripley and others, John receives three hundred acres.

4. There was one other Thomas Ripley christened in Ingleby between 1760 and 1770, namely Thomas son of Thomas Ripley, mason, Jan 9, 1768. He died in February, 1823, aged 54 (Northallerton Records Office), and was buried in the churchyard at St. Andrew's, Ingleby. This Thomas Ripley was married in Ingleby Apr 16, 1795 to Sarah Thomlinson, spinster. (The Register Book of Ingleby Greenhow). Sarah was buried (in the same grave as Thomas, who likely predeceased her) on Jul 11, 1830, aged 63 (Northallerton Records Office). Her abode at the time of her death is listed as Stokesley.

10. Mary names her grandson Robert Colling Read in her will. Robert Read was a son of Stephen Read (b May 6, 1734) and Mary Colling (b October 20, 1739/November 19, 1732). They are said to have emigrated to Nova Scotia on February 18, 1772, possibly aboard the 'Albion', and arrived arrived in Halifax on, May the 2nd. [https://ginsgenes.me/genealogy/histories/ScottBibleResearch.pdf]. Stephen Read was born in Kilham, Yorkshire (East Riding), while Mary Colling was born in Cayton, Yorkshire, near Scarborough. The couple were married in Cayton in 1760. 11. The Census of Cumberland County, 1827, indicates that Robert Ripley Jr. of Maccan and Southampton had two daughters as well as three sons.

14. There is some uncertainty about when William was born, and how he arrived in North America. His name does not appear on the 'Legge List', though the names of his brothers and sisters do. A William Ripley, son of Robert Ripley was baptised in St. Andrew's Church, Ingleby on Oct 9, 1769. There is no further mention of this William in the Register. However, William's gravestone in the Harrison Orchard, Maccan, notes that he was 71 years of age when he died on June 19, 1845 [Hill, Susan A. Some Cumberland County, Nova Scotia Cemeteries, 1997. p. 23]. This would place his date-of-birth in 1774, after June 19th. Some possibilities: (1) William was born on board the Providence or his mother was pregnant during the ten weeks passage. (2) William came later to Nova Scotia, perhaps in the company of his brother Thomas Ripley. (3) William was adopted by the Ripley family. It is most likely, however, that William's age on the tombstone is either wrong, or it has been transcribed incorrectly ... and that he was born in 1769, making his age at death 76. 17. Thomas Coates was a son of Thomas and Mary Coates of Sutton-Under-Whitestonecliffe, Yorkshire, and the grandson of Robert Coates of Cleaves Farm, Thirlby near Thirsk, Yorkshire. He was baptised in the parish church at Felixkirk on Jan 1, 1742. According to Thomas's tombstone at Smith's Creek, N.B., he was born in 1741 and arrived in Nova Scotia in 1772. His wife Ann was a daughter of Robert Hood, b ca 1715 and Mary Hood, b ca 1720 of Weighton, [Thirlyoverlon]?, Yorkshire. She died Nov 6, 1780, leaving Thomas with six small children. He subsequently married Elizabeth Henry.

30. P.A.N.S. Petition of John Ripley of River Philip, 1809: states that he has four children... Dawn Carter notes: Henry Mayne and Esther Ripley had a grandson named Robert Donkin Mayne by their son William Thomas Mayne. Perhaps that indicates Esther's mother was Margaret Donkin.
31. Editor's note: There is no proof at present that Andrew C. Ripley was a son of John. It is now clear, however, that Andrew could not have been a son of Henry and Mary (Fawcett) Ripley of Nappan. In his will (Will Book B, Book of Registry, p. 258, circa 1832) Henry names his 'four sons', John, Henry, Robert and Joseph. Andrew is not mentioned, but is a witness to the will.
32. The entry in the Cumberland vital statistics database (Deaths) for Isabella has the intriguing note that her father was John Thos. Ripley. (This may be a mis-reading however, since the abbreviation is difficult to read, and is inscribed somewhat below the 'John' portion). There is no other evidence at pesent that John's middle name was Thomas.
