The Nova Scotia census of 1827 lists John as the head of a household of four males and five females (one of whom was a servant). One child is said to have been born during the year preceding Sep 1827. Possibly some of John's 15 brothers and sisters are part of the household. He is listed as a dissenter from the Church of England, and a farmer. His property in 1827 includes: 20 acres under cultivation, 11 bushels of wheat harvested, 100 bushels of grain, 7 tons of hay, 1 horse, 8 cattle, 15 sheep, 10 pigs, and 450 bushels of potatoes. The census notes that John resides in Nappan, N.S.

Joseph remained with his father until he was sixteen-and-a-half years of age, when he 'began to serve an apprenticeship in wagon-making'. In 1871 he became interested in farming and moved to Brant County, Ontario, where he remained for eight years. He then moved to Kent County, Ontario and settled in Harwich Township on a rented farm. In 1887 he bought one hundred acres in Camden Township, where he farmed until 1901. He then divided the land between his two eldest sons and moved to Dresden, Ontario.[21]

An application for land dated 1825[54] states that Thomas Ripley of River Philip, N.S., aged 24, and Joseph Ripley, aged 21, ask for a certain lot at River Philip formerly 'laid off' for their father, who made some improvement but was unable to take out a grant. This request was later approved, and Thomas farmed at River Philip.
