The Nova Scotia census of 1827 lists John as the head of a household of four males and five females (one of whom was a servant). One child is said to have been born during the year preceding Sep 1827. Possibly some of John's 15 brothers and sisters are part of the household. He is listed as a dissenter from the Church of England, and a farmer. His property in 1827 includes: 20 acres under cultivation, 11 bushels of wheat harvested, 100 bushels of grain, 7 tons of hay, 1 horse, 8 cattle, 15 sheep, 10 pigs, and 450 bushels of potatoes. The census notes that John resides in Nappan, N.S.

Joseph remained with his father until he was sixteen-and-a-half years of age, when he 'began to serve an apprenticeship in wagon-making'. In 1871 he became interested in farming and moved to Brant County, Ontario, where he remained for eight years. He then moved to Kent County, Ontario and settled in Harwich Township on a rented farm. In 1887 he bought one hundred acres in Camden Township, where he farmed until 1901. He then divided the land between his two eldest sons and moved to Dresden, Ontario.[21]

An application for land dated 1825[54] states that Thomas Ripley of River Philip, N.S., aged 24, and Joseph Ripley, aged 21, ask for a certain lot at River Philip formerly 'laid off' for their father, who made some improvement but was unable to take out a grant. This request was later approved, and Thomas farmed at River Philip.

4. The following anecdote is told of Tom Bulmer: While chopping wood in the bush he had an accident. His axe caught a branch and glanced sideways, cutting across the toe of his mocassin. The toe of his stocking apparently soaking with blood, he was rushed home on a horse. He was in great pain, and fainted several times on the way. On examination his foot was found to be untouched. His wife had run out of grey yarn, and had mended the toes of his socks with red. (Source unknown).

He married [----- Warren]? and had at least one son and one daughter (Margaret). 'Jane Donkin, b ca 1786, daughter of Robert Donkin and Jane_(Crawford) Donkin, married Nov 26, 1804, David Bulmore [Bulmer], son of William Bulmore, an early settler from England. There are many trees that include William Nelson Smith (24 Oct 1811-1867) son of William Benjamin Smith (1792-1842) and Jane Bulmer (1785-1825). This is a different Jane Bulmer than ours. William Benjamin Smith's father is John L. "Roundhead" Smith married to Jane Chapman and there is a large monument at Point de Butte Westmoreland, N.B. which lists them and all their children and spouses. John came with his parents Nathaniel Smith and Elizabeth on the Albion in 1774 and then settled at Fort Lawrence, N.B. (Mallory Burton, 2013)

The LDS transcription lists Amie J. Mattenson (17)]. There has been considerable correspondence between myself and two other researchers (one of whom is the grandson of Amelia Jane Ripley). We strongly believe Annie (or Amie J.) is Amelia Jane Ripley... but listed as a Mattinson after her mother's 2nd marriage. 3) Sydney_Ellen Ripley, born 5-Feb-1867} in Mount Pleasant, died 1893. [Nova Scotia Birth Registration: Sydney Allen Ripley, male, was born Feb 5, 1867 in Mount Pleasant, s/o ___ Ripley & (not given). Registered/entered on Dec 31, 1867]. If Elizabeth's husband was John Henry Ripley, born 1827, then he would have been 35 and she 20 when they married. (A bit unusual.) Also, most documents list her husband a Henry Ripley (her marriage bond, her obituary, her daughter's marriage registration); however, there is one that lists him as John (the death reg. for Amelia Jane Ripley lists Amelia's father as John Ripley . The informant was her daughter). Because Henry Ripley (or John Henry Ripley) died before the 1871 census and Amelia died more than 70 years later in 1942, I wonder if Amelia's daugher was mistaken about the given name of her long deceased grandfather? Or was Henry Ripley indeed John Henry Ripley? I don't know... but have changed my records to show Amelia's husband as simply Henry Ripley.
